In Memoriam

Richard Grant Glassco (1931 - 2011)

On March 8, 2011, 3 months shy of his 80th birthday, Dick passed away peacefully at Baycrest Hospital with his family at his side. Dick was the beloved husband of Peggy for 54 years; proud and devoted father of Scott, Gayle (Woods), June (McDougall), Eric and Lindsay; dear father-in law of Drew McDougall and Jane and Nancy Glassco; and loving brother to Gay Evans and June Moore. He was predeceased by his brother Bill Glassco. Dick leaves behind 12 grandchildren (Connor, Taylor, Riley, & Jack Glassco; John, Andrew & Jessica Woods; Jaime, Pippa & Jackie McDougall; Emily & Jonathan Glassco), for whom he was a true mentor and role model. Born in Quebec City and raised in Toronto, Dick was educated at Ridley College where he was a prefect and leader on the football field. He was renowned in the pulp and paper industry and, after years with Abitibi Price, established his own business, Glassco Paper Marketing, in 1973. Due to his tremendous success in representing offshore paper mills, Dick was asked by one of his major suppliers, UPM-Kymmene of Finland, to spearhead the opening of their operations in Canada. Throughout his career, Dick was esteemed for his in-depth industry knowledge and will be fondly remembered for his passion and integrity. Dick enjoyed a healthy debate on politics of the day. While he was a Conservative, he had underlying beliefs in social justice and always exhibited a soft spot for the underdog. He was a Board member of the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation and contributed to the development of the Bethell Hospice in Caledon. He exhibited kindness to others at all times and gave true meaning to the word 'gentleman'. Dick loved the outdoors and was a true sports enthusiast. He was an accomplished skier and tennis player, and graced the hockey rinks with a strong presence, both on and off the ice. He took great pleasure in travels to Africa, China, India, and Europe especially golfing in Scotland. He was happiest puttering around the properties that he and Peggy built in the Eastern Townships (Quebec) and Caledon (ON), trimming his trees, and spending time with his family and dogs. The Glassco family would like to thank Lowell who provided outstanding care for Dick in his final days battling lung cancer and Alzheimer's. A reception to celebrate Dick's life will be held for family and close friends on Monday, March 14, 2011 from 5-7pm at the York Club (135 St George Street, Toronto). In lieu of flowers, and in honour of Dick's volunteer efforts towards building Bethell House, donations may be made to the Hospice Caledon Foundation (PO Box 75, Inglewood Ontario, L7C 3L6. Ph: 905-951-3534).

Rufus Glassco (W44C) reports:

Dinora, Sebastian and I are thrilled to announce the newest member of our family, a beautiful baby boy, whose name is not yet fully decided, but is likely to begin with Benjamin. I’m proud to say my son has joined in the tradition of his father and brother of being born on or near a long weekend! He was born Wednesday August 2nd, 2006, at 5:25 pm. I know what you’re thinking, Wednesday’s just about as far as you can get from a weekend, and daddy’s lost it. But his birthday is likely to fall on Simcoe Day weekend some year in the future! We’ll have a big party, I promise. And you’re all invited!

In Memoriam

William Grant Glassco (1935 - 2004)

Bill Glassco died at home with great dignity and humour, surrounded by family, on September 13, 2004. He was sixty-nine.

Beloved father of Benji, Daniel, Briony and Rufus, and dear father-in-law and suegrazo to Karen, Clive and Dinora. He will be sadly missed by all his grandchildren - Tyler, Max, Kyra, Zoe¨ and Sebastian. A dear brother to June and Ted Moore, Gay and John Evans, and Richard and Peggy Glassco.

He was the inspiration for countless actors, playwrights, directors and theatre professionals from all over the this country and around the world. He was also a treasured friend to many. A proud graduate of Ridley College, Princeton University, Worcester College, Oxford, and NewYork University. Bill was cofounder, along with Jane Glassco, of the Tarragon Theatre. He also went on to cofound the Canadian Stage Company, now known as Canstage, and the Montreal Young Company. He was passionate about Quebec, the province of his birth and his home for the last 12 years, and its rich history and culture. He was instrumental in bringing the works of Michel Tremblay, Michel Marc Bouchard, and many other Quebecois playwrights to English speaking audiences all over the world.

He was an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a recipient of an honorary doctorate of letters from the University of Toronto, and the DORA Silver Ticket Award for lifetime contribution to theatre.

A family service will be held on Thursday, September 16, in Toronto. A memorial celebration will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to The Montreal Young Company. Bill passionately believed that our young actors, upon graduation from theatre school, needed practical experience in professional productions of both contemporary and classical plays in a company environment. He very much wanted this company, his dream, to live on after he was gone. Please send donations to The Montreal Young Company, 3558 Marlowe Ave., Montreal, QC, H4A 3L7. Tax receipts will be issued.
