On Tuesday, August 25th, 1998 members of the "Interim Committee" met and reviewed a number of issues, including this web site, future reunions, and the family history project. One of the outcomes of the meeting was preparation of a draft of a mailer to all family members alerting them to the availability of the web site as a medium of communication. Also publicized in the mailer was notification of the first Price family mini-reunion (details on Reunion page).

Reunions

The first Price Family Mini-Reunion, was held on Thursday, Nov. 5th, 1998 at the Montreal Racket Club.

In attendance were: Jim and Sheila Campbell (H24), Tim and Denise Price (W14A), Betty Price (A1), Elizabeth Mackay (A13) and Bill McCrudden, Miles Price (A12), Caroline Elliott (A12B), Hartland Price (W13) and friend, Andrew Price (W23A), Bryan Price (W23C), Frank and Joan Winser (W11), John and Karma Hallward (W14B), Greville and Avril Price (H81), Tony Price (W22), Merne Price (W14), Alistair Price (H81C) and Barbara Holman, Mike and Jennifer Price (W52), David Price (W52B) and Catherine MacKenzie. Two new family members are due soon; both Denise and Caroline are expecting.

A good time was had by all, but the collective sentiment seemed to be that we would like to see more of the younger generation in attendance at these family events.

A note of thanks to Tim for making arrangements for the venue, and to Mike for providing all the names and phone numbers needed for contact and follow-up. And of course to Alistair for the heavy lifting of putting on the event itself.

Dec. 1st, 1999

David Price reports on the 2nd Annual Price Family Mini-Reunion in Montreal.

Here is a debrief of the November 25 mini-reunion in Montreal (scroll down for who attended). I hope my comments will be of use for future family projects (including mini-reunions in other cities). I would like to thank my parents, Michael and Jennifer Price, for hosting the event and doing a great job!

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, I think, is to get the e-mail addresses of as many people as possible. There must be dozens of people who have email, but are not on the list. If you can forward the email addresses of your immediate family members or of relatives with whom you keep in touch to family@ammsvces.com, it would be a great help to organizers of future events.

Accomplishments:

(1) hosting a SECOND annual reunion in Montreal with 25 attendees, (including 9 who were not at the first mini-reunion). If we add the 9 who were at last year's but not at this year's, a total of 34 have attended a mini-reunion in Montreal.

(2) having representatives from three branches (Arthur's, Harry's and Willies)

(3) updating the mailing list somewhat(maintained by Michael Price at ppltdmp@aol.com)

(4) updating the email list somewhat (maintained on the website, http://www.ammsvces.com/price_family.html)

(5) spreading the word about the web-site and the available email addresses by mailing everybody on the mailing list.

Lessons:(1) Don't have an event too close to American Thanksgiving. A few people were unable to attend as a result. I think that ALWAYS having it on the first Thursday of November would be good. Merne Price has offered to host the 3rd mini-reunion - tentatively scheduled for Thursday November 2, 2000.

In attendance on November 25, 1999 were: Tim, Denise and Tom Price (W14A), Betty Price (A1), Elizabeth Mackay (A13), Tom Mackay (A13D), Caroline Elliott (A12B), Bryan Price (W23C), Joan Winser (W11), Karma Hallward (W14B), Merne Price (W14), Peter and Penny Price (W16), Derek and Jill Price (W15), Pam Price (W22), Alistair Price (H81C) and Barbara Holman, Gilmour Price (H51), Bill Glassco (W43),Mike and Jennifer Price (W52), David Price (W52B) and Catherine McKenzie.

Of interest to all Family members from Bryan Price (W23B) with notes from Gustavo Price (Las Condes, Chile):

In Memoriam
Ricardo Barroilhet Price 1928-2007

I regret to inform you that the “first Chilean ambassador” to our  Price reunions passed away in January of last year. Ricardo was  diagnosed with lung cancer almost one year ago and died just short of  80, an age that belied his youthful appearance.  Ricardo Barroilhet  Price greatly enjoyed his visit to the first Price reunion and spoke  highly of the “young Prices”.

Subject to family approval, I would be happy to assist in procuring any live music being planned for the occasion.

January was a good month for the Arthur's future: John Whitelaw (A31B) and his wife, Tracie, produced Jack Henry mid-February. Tracie, who is in the midst of taking her B.Ed. was back at classes with Jack in under three weeks! Less than two weeks later, Carola Price Mendoza (A51A) and Jacob had Sebastian Miguel (the Miguel in honour of Toby). All concerned are doing well. Carola and jacob are living in Halifax, John and Tracie currently are under the Whitelaw Sr.'s roof.

The family of our late cousin Toby Price (A51) gathered in Tadoussac over the Thanksgiving week-end to scatter his ashes. In contrast to this sad occasion, his daughter, Carola, and her husband, Jacob, are happy to announce that they are expecting their first child in January. And Toby's elder son, Philip, has just completed a music video which was to air this month (October) on Much, Much, MuchMore Music and Bravo.

Bill and Jenny Whitelaw's (A31) younger son, John, and his wife, Tracie, are living in Calgary and are expecting a baby in March. John is working as a carpenter and trying to finish his last few courses for his music degree from McGill. Tracie is at the University of Calgary taking her Education degree.

Ryerson Maybee (A21A) is serving a six month stint with the Militia in Bosnia. He has some time off in November and his mother, Alies, is going to rendezvous with him and his grandmother, Constance (A2), in Prague.

Joyce Dawson (A6) celebrated her 80th birthday this month. Elizabeth (A13), Lorna (A41) and Jenny (A31), as well as her daughter, Anne (our editor) all gathered together for the occasion, and had a great week on Salt Spring Island. Anne's daughter, Jane MacAulay (A61B) is at Mount Allison University and so may try to chase down some of the family in the east while she's there.

A couple of suggestions:
(a) that in planning for future reunions (mini or otherwise) cognizance be taken of the fact that there are a considerable number of Prices now living in the West and
near-West, ranging from San Francisco to Seattle,Victoria,Vancouver,North Vancouver,West Vancouver, Bowen Island, B.C.,Millbay, B.C.and Calgary, Alta.
(b) that we consider that an important feature of the reunions is to bring together the young and very young from all the families, who otherwise would not get to know each other.

Brian (W14C) and Meg Price write in part:

December 23rd, 1999

Hi to all our Family and Friend’s from the “China Prices”

We hope this finds you all in good health and that you have a Merry Christmas and very Happy New Year.

The year has seen some pretty huge changes for both of us, not the least of which was getting married in Melbourne on April 17th. The wedding was a great affair with many family and friends coming from far and wide. We have both agreed that there is only one thing we would change… we would make the party last longer (who, us?) – it went by far too quickly. A very special memory for us and hopefully for all of you that were able to join us.

Running a close second would have to be our move to Shanghai, China. In January, Brian will have been living in Shanghai for a full year and although his communication skills here could best be termed as “taxi Chinese” (go straight, turn right/left, two beers please, etc) luckily he was able to convince Meg to move up to Shanghai in May after the wedding! We both now feel at “home” here.

The first thing to strike us both in Shanghai (not literally speaking!) was the sheer number of people in the city. Just crossing the road was a tough task – riding around the streets in a cab was more fun and scarier than the scariest roller coaster one could find. Little babies and toddlers, although beautifully behaved and very cute would constantly surprise us by squatting down wherever to have a pee – no nappies/ diapers, just a slit in the pants! We even had one little boy peeing away sitting in the supermarket trolley while being wheeled down the aisle! In fact grown men have no problems stopping on the side of the road for a pee when the mood takes them – this was initially a little disturbing for Meg but Brian has taken to the practice quite well. We also were a little taken aback by the amount of stares we get, people love to have a good look at us foreigners. Of course, this has nothing to do with Meg’s shining blonde hair… a common sight up here (NOT!). The supermarket is great fun also as the locals love to look through our trolley to see what we are buying; some will even reach in
and move things around in order to see what’s there! There were many more little “things” like this we had to get used to – shopping for food is always fun and sometimes we are not sure if we are in a food market or a pet store! In the restaurants, we have eaten all sorts of things from snake to bamboo shoots, jelly fish to lotus flower and many other things we have not the faintest idea what they are and most of the time we just do not want to know.

We have also had a few medical mishaps, which while being quite unpleasant at the time have also given us many a story to tell! The first was Brian dislocating his shoulder (playing softball none-the-less!) and having a local Chinese “doctor” (complete with his foot in Brian’s armpit) put it back into place. The second was Meg dislocating her finger playing touch footy (rugby). This one ended up with having to fly to Hong Kong for 3 days to have it operated on – in the middle of a typhoon just to make things a little more exciting!

All of the things that first stood out when we arrived are now “normal” to us and we really have become quite fond of this city known as the Paris of the East. We have made wonderful friends, many fellow expats leading very similar lives. Shanghai has many, many restaurants and bars and we feel it is important to experience all of them while we are here (who, us?). Sometimes we are so enthusiastic about this we go to several in the same night – ALL night. It is a normal part of expat life we have found to work hard and play hard and we are doing our best to fit in!

In summary of our China experience to date, we have put together a list of the “Top 5 Things” that we like about China and some we may not be so fond of….

Good things about China:
1. Lots of taxi’s - $2 will get you a long way. Who needs a car anyway? (even if it is a death defying experience!)
2. Nice “inquisitive” people – a smile always brings one in return!
3. Haircuts - $8 gets you a good haircut (surprisingly) and an even better hour long neck/shoulders massage.
4. Wonderful cheap “brand name” clothing, CD’s, etc – the real thing. (really!?)
5. Being an expat in Shanghai.

Things we will not miss when the time comes:
1. Unusual food – rice and noodles are OK, snake and jellyfish are not!
2. Congestion of people – we would get 2 minute penalty for elbowing in Canada!
3. Smells in the back alleys – it is hard to hold your breath for that long…
4. Medical system – thank god for good health insurance / medicare.
5. Spitting – big, loud, deep throat.. OK, you get the idea…. very unappealing….

On the work front – yes, life is not all a bowl of expat cherries – both of us are “gainfully” employed.

Brian is working with an Australian Construction company (Hooker Cockram for those of you who do not know – you should see the variations we get on the company name here in China!) building a Biologicals Vaccines Plant for a large International Company. It has been a very “interesting” experience for a multitude of reasons. A lot of the local labour is actually quite skilled but lack on the finish to get the job done well (and Brian’s really not a perfectionist or anything…) and this can be very frustrating as you can tell them something one day and it is “forgotten” the next! Personal safety is not highly regarded either as these guys climb around like monkeys without any safety harnesses – something we enforce constantly, but refer to the previous sentence! The other interesting element is the delay factor… it seems Brian is a master at picking projects that experience numerous delays for a variety of reasons. Considering he started in Australia in Oct. ’96 with the plan of relocating to China in early ’97 (only actually ended up relocating in early ’99), it was a tough go for him being “stuck” in Australia for so long (such unfriendly people!). Of course, the silver lining is that it gave him enough time to finally figure out that Meg was the one and only…

All going well, things should finish up sometime in June… but, we are not holding our breath!! Meg has had an array of interesting work over her time here. For the first 4 months, she worked 3 days a week at an international business school career counseling the Chinese MBA students. This was fun and a good way to learn from young Chinese people about their thoughts on various issues. Although it was interesting and luckily everyone spoke English, there were some difficulties – long slow bus ride to/from work each day, a leaking office all through the rainy season (Meg finally understood why her colleagues wore their gumboots to work), and “local management”. Decision making is not always a strong point over here and Meg just about lost it one day when the management group took 2 hours to decide how the chairs should be arranged for an upcoming presentation! The school cafeteria served food that was unfortunately so bad that even Meg (who generally is not one to pass up on food) could not even walk into the room with out getting ill. So after finishing up there, she moved on to doing some general Human Resource consulting work with an Australian consulting firm that is setting up in Shanghai. More
recently, Morgan and Banks (a large recruitment and consulting firm) have employed her to work on site at Hewlett Packard both in Taiwan and Shanghai to set up HP’s recruitment procedures and recruit staff for them. So for now and the first couple of months in the New Year, some major commuting is in order for Meg. You have to realise that that there are no direct flights to Taiwan from China (have to go through Hong Kong) – have a look at that on a map! What should be 1.5 hour’s turns into 6 pretty quickly! She will also be taking on a role as Business Manager for Morgan and Banks to set up an office for them in Shanghai, which will keep her closer to “home”. Much as she is excited about the new role she is a little upset that this will be a full time role and there will be no more tennis mornings, girls lunches or mid week shopping expeditions!! Brian as you can imagine is quite happy she will be out of the shops and restaurants and inside making some money instead!

We have also been very lucky to do a great deal of travelling over the past year and combine this with seeing family and friends. We spent two wonderful weeks in Canada (Metis, Montreal, and Knowlton) in July where we had yet another party to celebrate our marriage and we were thus able to celebrate with all the family and friends who could not make to the wedding. In October, we went to Nepal for a 5-day trek in the Annapurna Region with a few days on either end in Kathmandu – beautiful mountains! Recently Meg has just been in the UK visiting her Mum and Dad for 2 weeks and came back stocked up with life’s luxuries, wine, cheese, pate, deodorant and jam!! First thing in January (after the 2000 roll over), we are heading to Thailand for 10 days to find some sun and sea. We are missing the Australian summer and beaches so we thought we had better go somewhere to thaw and chill out! We have also been taking off the odd weekends to visit some other cities in China such as Beijing, Suzhou and Hangzhou – all these have been really interesting and we have many a story to tell.

For Christmas, we are having 10 people to our place for the traditional Christmas lunch (had the turkey and ham flown in from Australia!) We are then meeting up with another group to go to a local karoke bar to entertain the locals by singing Christmas carols to them (boy, are they in for a treat!). New years will be spent at a huge bash in a 7th floor restaurant on “The Bund” (see attached photos). Should be spectacular, as we will be able to watch the fireworks and drink, eat and dance until the wee hours of the new millennium. Our group of 20 is all wearing silver clothes hand made for the occasion so the photos should be very entertaining!

As you can see, 1999 has not been dull for us, it has been a year of fun, adventure, travel and some hard work mixed in. We have loved every minute and would do it all again if only that were possible. We are both very much looking forward to the new millennium and to continue to find adventures and enjoy our lives together. Certainly at times like Christmas we really miss all our families and friends – you are all in our thoughts and we hope that you have a wonderful Christmas and that the New year brings you all good health and much happiness.

With Love

Meg and Brian

PS: No “we” are NOT pregnant!

Good timing as I actually go next Tuesday! This email address should stay alive but I have also copied this to my other email (work) which will definitely keep functioning.

I will write some more tales from Shanghai for posting on the family site once I get settled. There certainly will be an open invite to all family members as we have a great apartment there with a spare bedroom.

Many thanks for setting up this area for intra-family communication. I dare say Sir William would approve but also be shocked. Congrats to the family reps for their contribution of time to keep the site running smoothly.

My inquiry to the web page is to find the location of John Price (Mexico). I am on theheading south of the Rio Grande next week. Any leads on his whereabouts?

Ed note: If anyone can shed some light on the whereabouts of John, please e-mail Bryan, whose address is on the E-mail page.

This is very exciting that you have taken the initiative to get this page going. As an afficianado of the www, I am delighted that a vehicle now exists to spread the news!

I am not however proficient in forwarding info, pictures etc. via e-mail but when able and I know many others must be in the same boat, have various pieces that can be posted for all to see. As administrator of the site, I would imagine that some archiving can eventually be developed as info arrives.

I would suggest that as a start, that each family page at least have the extended (incl. outlaws) FAMILY TREE (as done by myself/Toby and Michael for the 1987 reunion and revised in 1992) be posted to the Arthur/Henry/William pages. Timmy tells me that Toby 's computer is guarding this valuable info! (Ed. note: Family tree will be published on the site as and when available, and can be updated.)

As a second suggestion, post the reunion ADDRESS BOOK on the site and again, request updates and revisions and, improved telephone numbers incl. work, home, cottage etc. (Ed. note: We plan to do this, starting with the first mini-reunion.)

Congratulations on this endeavour!! Excellent start to a promising project.

Tim and I have had a brief discussion on the future development of both this page and establishing a Vancouver 'base' for parts or all of the family. We will be getting into greater detail next week in Montreal.

OTTAWA: Seventy-two appointments to the Order of Canada were announced on July 7, 1998 by the Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc, Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order. The Order of Canada recognizes people who have made a difference to our country. The list of appointments includes Tony Price with the official citation as follows :

Edward Anthony Price, C.M.
St-Laurent de l'Île d'Orléans, Que.
Member of the Order of Canada

He has made his mark in many ways. Working as a lawyer, he became an expert in international development. The considerable knowledge he gained in Africa as a regional director of new branches of the International Development Research Centre later enabled him to advise this agency on reshaping its policies. Most recently, he took on negotiation and mediation roles in several of Canada's major Aboriginal land claims cases. He has also strengthened awareness of Québec's historical and cultural heritage through his involvement in many of the city's restoration projects.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. The first person to be invested in the Order was the Right Honourable Roland Michener, who received the insignia of Chancellor from Her Majesty on July 5, 1967. Family members will recall that Toby Price was the naval aide-de-camp for Michener when he was Governor General.

The first family member so honoured was John H. (Jack) Price in 1968. His entry on the Order of Canada Membership List appears as below:

Price, Brigadier-General (Retd) John H., O.C., O.B.E., M.C., E.D., D.C.L.
Westmount, Quebec
Appointed: 12/20/1968
Investiture:
04/08/1969

I heard about the mini-reunion and unfortunately I'll be in Mexico on my honeymoon at the time! I'm getting married on the 20th, and I'm sorry to say I'll be stealing some other Prices away from Montreal that week.

My new e-mail address is rufusglassco@yahoo.com.

Hi, and thanks for the mailing. I wanted to know what kind of information you might want for the Glassco branch of the Price family tree. My sister just gave birth to twin girls in March, and both of my nephews were born after the last reunion, so I presume they are not on the tree either. My address is, obviously, good (as I received your mailing), but I can send on the new addresses of my brother and sister if you are updating your database. I'm excited to hear that people are meeting and talking of a reunion, so I'd love to know if any progress has been made. Thanks for all your hard work, and let me know if you need more info.
